Round window for house design and where they work best

A round window is often used to soften strong architectural lines, add symmetry, and bring daylight into spaces that are otherwise difficult to brighten. In UK homes, Round Windows are commonly used in gable ends, stairwells, bathrooms, and loft conversions, either as a subtle accent or as a central architectural feature.

Because round windows are usually specified for design impact, it is worth deciding early whether the window is purely decorative or also needs ventilation. Fixed round windows can be an excellent choice where you want a clean minimal detail and strong airtightness, while ventilation can often be handled with nearby opening windows.

Many customers ask for an aluminium round window because they want a durable low maintenance external finish with a crisp architectural look. We achieves this through composite construction that pairs an external aluminium profile with an internal timber frame for warmth inside.

We also use Idealcore in key parts of the frame design. Idealcore is a moulded profile in thermal PUR that aims to eliminate known problems with thermal bridges between external aluminium and internal timber, and Idealcore frames come with a 25 year warranty.

Round double glazed windows and round triple glazed windows

Idealcombi round windows are available with both double glazing and triple glazing, allowing you to choose the most suitable solution for your project.

Round double glazed windows are often selected where good comfort and energy performance are required while keeping glazing thickness and weight lower. This option can be well suited to many residential applications where balanced thermal performance and practical design considerations are important.

Round triple glazed windows are typically chosen for projects with higher energy performance requirements, draught sensitive rooms, or buildings located in colder environments. However, the final thermal performance of any window will depend on factors such as size, glazing specification, and overall configuration.

Round Window Styling options: colours, glazing bars, privacy, and safety glass

Idealcombi round windows can be supplied with glazing bars, which is useful when matching heritage proportions or creating a traditional look in a modern build.

You can also specify colours for the aluminium exterior finish. See guidance on choosing window colours and lists common RAL options. For bathrooms and other sensitive locations, privacy glazing can maintain daylight while limiting direct sight lines.

Round Windows FAQs

What are other names for Round Windows?

Round windows are often referred to as circular windows, oculus windows, or bullseye windows. In architectural terms, they may also be called porthole windows, especially when used in bathrooms or nautical style designs. At IdealCombi, we offer custom made round windows tailored to your project's specific design needs. Speak to one of our team or call 01582860940.

How much does a round window cost?

The cost of a round window depends on factors like size, glazing type (double or triple), material choice, and whether the unit is fixed or operable. While prices can vary widely, custom round windows typically start at a higher price point than standard shapes due to the bespoke nature of the design. For an accurate estimate, it's best to request a quote based on your specific requirements or speak to our team.

Are round windows expensive?

Yes, round windows tend to be more expensive than standard rectangular windows. This is primarily due to the custom engineering involved in shaping the frame and glazing, as well as the specialized installation often required. However, the added visual impact and design value can make them a worthwhile investment for high end or architectural builds. To find out more speak to one of our team.

How do you measure a round window?

Most round windows are specified by diameter. Measure across the widest part of the opening in multiple directions and use the smallest measurement for ordering unless your supplier advises otherwise. For replacements, also note reveal depth and wall build up so the frame can be detailed correctly.
