Aluminium French doors, single or double, opening in or out

French doors are a pair of glazed doors, hinged at opposite sides, that open from the middle to give a wide opening to a garden, patio, terrace or balcony. Idealcombi French doors are made with aluminium profiles, open inwards or outwards, and come with double or triple glazing.

They use the same profiles as the matching Idealcombi windows, so you can combine French doors and windows in the same screen and keep a uniform, sleek look.

French doors are available as single doors or as double doors. On a double door the master leaf works like a normal door, and the second leaf opens when you need a big opening. High and low level thresholds are available, so talk to our team to find out what is right for you.

Not sure which way your doors should open? Read about inward opening French doors and outward opening terrace doors, or see all our patio doors.

Benefits of French Doors

  • Wide, open access
A pair of doors opens up a wide opening, linking the room to your garden, patio or balcony.

  • More light and views
Large glazed leaves bring daylight into the room and keep the view open.

  • A matching look
French doors share the profiles of the matching window series, so doors and windows look the same.

  • Open inwards or outwards
Choose the opening direction that suits your room and your outside space.

  • Energy efficient
Choose double or triple glazing for strong thermal performance.

Inward Opening French Doors

Futura+i - Tilt and Turn Door

Idealcombi Futura+i inward opening French doors

Inward opening French doors are a good fit where outside space is limited, and for Juliet balconies, including in high-rise buildings. Their hinges are on the inside, so no one can reach them from the outside.

Idealcombi Futura+i (i for inward) is available as a single or double door, with a floating mullion for a big opening when you need one, and as a tilt and turn French door. The Frame IC and Nation IC ranges are also available as inward opening doors, with styling bars and both double and triple glazing.

Outward Opening French Doors

Outward opening French doors save space inside, so it is easier to arrange your furniture and make the most of the room. Outward swinging doors can also create a tighter seal against wind and rain, because the wind pressure pushes the door more firmly against the weather stripping.

The Idealcombi Futura+ terrace doors have the same 53 mm sightlines as the rest of the Futura+ range, so the look stays uniform across all opening and fixed windows and doors.

The doors offer strong thermal performance too:
Double glazing: 1.32 W/m²K
Triple glazing: 0.75 W/m²K

French Door FAQs

What are French doors?

French doors are a pair of glazed doors, hinged at opposite sides, that open from the middle to give a wide opening to a garden, patio, terrace or balcony.

Are French doors the same as patio doors?

At Idealcombi, French doors are hinged double terrace doors, which also belong to our patio doors range. Inward opening terrace doors are also called French doors. Our sliding patio doors are a different product, see sliding doors.

Should French doors open inwards or outwards?

Inward opening doors suit areas where outside space is limited and Juliet balconies, and their hinges sit inside, out of reach from outside. Outward opening doors save space inside the room and can create a tighter seal against wind and rain. Read about inward opening French doors and outward opening terrace doors.

Can French doors be triple glazed?

Yes. Idealcombi French doors are available with double or triple glazing. On the Futura+ terrace doors, double glazing reaches 1.32 W/m²K and triple glazing 0.75 W/m²K.

Can I have French doors with windows beside them?

Yes. Idealcombi terrace doors have the same look as the windows in the same product series, so you can combine French doors and windows in the same screen and keep a uniform design. Top lights are also available.

Are French doors secure?

The frame design and hinge system make Idealcombi doors hard to force open from the outside, and every door has a locking handle. Locking cylinders are available for extra security.

Do you need planning permission for French doors?

Replacing existing French doors with like-for-like doors does not normally need planning permission, but the work must meet building regulations. Check with your local planning authority if the building is listed or in a conservation area, or if you are creating a new opening. Read our planning permission guide.
