Single and double outward opening terrace doors

With outward opening terrace doors it is easy to access your outside areas.

Idealcombi terrace doors have the same look as the windows in the same product series - meaning you can combine terrace doors and windows in the same screen and keep a uniform and sleek design.

The outward opening terrace door is available as single or double terrace doors. The double terrace door can be fully opened, with a floating mullion, if a big opening is needed - the master will work as a normal single terrace door.

Locking cylinders are also available and will provide a little extra security if you have pets or small children in your home.

Idealcombi terrace doors are available with both high an low level thresholds, talk to our team to find out what is right for you.

Benefits of Outward Opening Exterior Doors

  • Save space inside
These doors open outwards, so you don’t lose space inside. That makes it easier to arrange your furniture and maximise the usable area.

  • Stay secure
The frame design and hinge system make these doors hard to force open from the outside.

  • Keep the weather out
Outward swinging doors can create a tighter seal against wind and rain, as the wind pressure pushes the door more firmly against the weather stripping.

  • Fit with any style
You can use them on their own or next to fixed glazing. They look clean and modern, but still work with traditional homes too.

Outward Opening Door Faqs

Why Do Most Doors Open Inwards?
  • Security

Inward-opening doors are harder to tamper with. Their hinges are inside, so no one can access them from the outside. Some outward-opening doors have protected hinges, but they’re still more exposed.

It’s also easier to close the door on someone you don’t want at your doorstep. If the door opened outwards, they’d already be standing in the way. And you can fit extra locks or chains more easily on the inside.

  • Weather

Outward-opening doors take more punishment from wind and rain. A strong gust can fling the door open. Rainwater can seep into the top edge if it’s not sealed well. After a heavy snowfall, you might not even be able to open the door.

  • Safety

Emergency crews can break through inward-opening doors faster. And if someone’s standing outside, you won’t accidentally hit them when you open the door.

Can an external door open outwards?

Yes. Fire exits open outward so people can get out fast without thinking. You push and walk through. No delay.

Public buildings often use outward-opening doors for the same reason. They're easier to use for kids, older adults, and wheelchair users. No need to back up and pull the door open.

For homes, you might choose outward-opening doors for a patio. That way, you keep more space inside for furniture.

Why Do Front Doors Open Out in Sweden?

In Sweden and other Nordic countries, most doors open outwards. You’ve probably seen this in TV shows set there.

There are a few reasons:

  • Fire safety

  • Saving space in small homes

  • Dealing with snow

Outward-opening doors don’t bring snow inside when you open them. And snow tends to get cleared quickly anyway. So the risk of getting stuck inside isn’t a big deal there.

Should French doors open outwards?

That depends on the space. Outward-opening French doors save interior room and seal better against wind. But if there’s limited space or walkways outside, inward opening might make more sense.

Uk Law and Doors Opening Outwards

Section 153 of the Highways Act 1980 says your door can’t open out onto a public path or street unless the local council and highway authority say it’s okay. If your door opens straight onto the pavement, you need their permission.

If you skip that, they can make you change the door. You’ll get a warning. If you ignore it, you can be fined and may have to pay for the fix.

If your door opens onto private space, like a front garden or path, you’re fine. But always check before you install anything.
